Every year, 24 January is celebrated as "National Girl Child Day" in India. The objective of this day is to spread awareness about the importance of the girl child. The initiative to celebrate this day was taken by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2008.

This day aims to shed light on issues such as female infanticide, gender inequality, and physical abuse. The main objective of the day is to highlights problems faced by girls. National Girl Child Day aware girls about their rights, the importance of education, health, and nutrition.

The day is in line with campaigns and programs of the government like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Save the Girl Child, free/ subsidised education, and reservations for women in colleges and universities.

History : National Girl Child Day 2022

In 2008, the Ministry of Women and Child Development initiated the National Girl Child Day. The main aim of this day is to spread awareness about the gender-based discrimination that girls face in the society.

In order to improve the condition of girls, the Indian government has taken several steps over the years such as Save the Girl Child, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, free or subsidised education for the girl children, reservations for women in colleges and universities.

Theme : National Girl Child Day 2022

The day is celebrated with events and programs based on annual themes. In 2019, the theme was 'Empowering Girls for a Brighter Tomorrow'. It was ‘My voice, our common future’ in 2020. In 2021, the theme for National Girl Child Day was ‘Digital Generation, Our Generation’. The theme for 2022 is yet to be officially announced.

Celebrations : National Girl Child Day 2022

Every year, various events are organised by government to celebrate this day. This year, Ministry of Culture is organising an event called ‘Umang Rangoli Utsav', which is a part of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. As part of this event, participating teams will make Rangoli decorations at over 50 special locations across the country, said a press release yesterday.

Kilometre long Rangoli decorations will be made on the roads and squares named after female freedom fighters or female role models of the country.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually interact with and felicitate the awardees of the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar (PMRBP) on this day, in the presence of Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Zubin Irani and Minister of State Munjpara Mahendrabhai.
