New Delhi: Following a recent Covid-19 outbreak, more than 5 lakh people were quarantined in Zhejiang province of China on Tuesday, news agency AFP reported. This latest outbreak comes amidst China's preparation for hosting Winter Olympics in February next year.
Zhejiang which is a major industrial and export hub on the country's east coast, reported 44 of China's 51 domestically transmitted coronavirus cases on Tuesday, taking the tally to nearly 200 since last week. Subsequently, some districts were put under business shutdown in the economically crucial province of Zhejiang.
As a precautionary measure, officials in Zhejiang have begun a mass testing campaign of its residents aided with area-specific lockdowns.
More than 540,000 people have been put in quarantine in Zhejiang, according to officials quoted in the AFP report. Other districts including Ningbo, the province's main port, where China's first Omicron case was detected earlier, and the nearby city of Shaoxing were also suspending some business operations.
